BULK CARGO TRAILER UNDERCARRIAGES & BRAKING SYSTEMS
The combination of larger, faster modern tractors towing larger capacity trailers with increased gross weights together with greater utilisation of trailers in agriculture means chassis, axle and suspensions need to be built to withstand longer duty cycles under greater loads.

Stronga respond to this challenge by specifying modern reliable sprung suspensions and drawbars as standard on larger models from the worlds leading suppliers offering great dynamic properties under load and at speed. The development of Stronga agricultural trailers is enhanced by our approach using a continuous improvement management process that constantly reviews feedback from our service teams and customers which after analysis leads to step by step improvement design of chassis, suspension, axles and tyres.

Undercarriages fitted to Stronga bulk trailers are also approved by local EU country standards, for example, by TUV in Germany, CEMAGREF and UTAC in France.

Air Suspensions on Stronga Agricultural Trailers
For customers wanting advanced suspension features on Stronga truck or agricultural trailers there are several advantages gained by specifying optional air suspension.
Air suspensions offer good directional stability with optimum travel smoothness. Ride height can be lowered and remains consistent under fully loaded conditions whilst shock absorbers prevent trailer vibration. Air bags ensure optimal road holding due to the even pressure exerted on the tyres a factor which also provides for enhanced braking and reduced tyre wear while the option of axle lift gives greater operational efficiency.

Air suspension advantages at a glance:
- Air springs offer a quiet, cushioned ride and are more road friendly than steel springs
- They provide constant ride height even when fully loaded and deliver long, trouble free service.
- Air bags improve vibration damping and because there's less vibration the trailer chassis, body and all components are less stressed leading to reduced downtime and extended trailer life
- Greater ride comfort and reduced driver fatigue
- Cargo enjoys better protection from shock and vibration
- Operators gain control over ride height

We fit large capacity air receivers giving customers plenty of spare reservoir capacity for the air suspension.
Roll stability
Specifying air suspension also opens the door for customers to take advantage for further performance enhancing options like Wabco roll stability control integrated with the EBS braking control unit which reliably prevents vehicle roll-over within certain physical limits.
The roll stability function integrated in the software and hardware of the EBS modulator. The system assesses the vehicle data such as wheel speed, load information and by means of an integrated sensor, transverse acceleration data. By analyzing this data quickly and effectively, the vehicle electronic control unit detects the chances of vehicle roll-over and automatically applies the brakes.

Lift Axles for Agricultural and Commercial Trailers
Choosing air suspension opens another option for customers, that of lift axles, well used in commercial trucking for many years this technology has been underutilised in agriculture.
Stronga in partnership with Wabco offer the same control technology widely used in trucks to manually lift axles on empty trailers and electronically lower the axles when the trailer is loaded.

There are several advantages to the operator using lift axles in Agricultural trailers

There are several advantages to the operator using lift axles in Agricultural trailers
- Reduced fuel costs when travelling empty
- Improved tyre wear and reduced tyre scrubbing on the road and field
- Reduced bouncing on rough terrain when the trailer is empty
- Improved turning circle and manoeuvrability
- Increased drawbar loads aiding traction when towing empty trailers
Agricultural equipment Axles and Brakes – Serious Business
Axle and brake specification as well as setup on any agricultural trailer are serious business and needs to offer reliability, safety, durability and robustness. A vital part of our technical teams work ensures brake calculations and axle loads are correctly configured as part of an integrated approach with the braking system specification. Working with our supply partners Stronga have the technical expertise and vast experience in the areas of agricultural vehicle brake compatibility.
Fitting s-cam brake operators provides graduated braking leading to reduced brake wear and consequent longer service intervals and lower operating costs.
Fitting quality automatic and manual brake actuators leads to reduced maintenance and reliable brake adjustment.

Steering axles on Agricultural bulk trailers
Stronga offer various practical steering axle options to customers to enhance trailer performance.

Steering axles - advantages at a glance:
- Easier cornering especially on triaxle configurations
- Reduced tyre wear
- Reduced damage to road and field surfaces
- Improved turning circle
- Improved driving line and manoeuvrability
Self steering axles on agricultural trailers
The simplest form of steering axle enables the trailing axle to steer thereby reducing the turning force need to tow trailers around corners especially when load. An important feature of any free steering axle is the locking facility when reversing.

The self steering axle makes for reduced stress on road surfaces, tyres tractor and trailer and ensures quick steering response when travelling through corners.

Positive steering axles
Another option to enhance Stronga bulk trailers is the positive or power steered facility with hydraulic cylinders operating the steering of the axles mounted on the trailer.
A system that works when travelling forward and reversing.

This system works by virtue of hydraulic cylinders connected to the tractor with oil flowing and thereby operating the hydraulic cylinders on the steering axles.
This feature makes trailers fitted with this option very manoeuvrable in tight yards and saves the scrubbing on road and field surfaces although owning positive steering does mean increased time taken hitching and unhitching the trailer from the tractor.

Braking Systems – Effective Stopping Power
Increasing tractors speeds have a large effect on the amount kinetic energy needing to be braked.
For example braking a 50 Kph tractor /trailer combination needs around 150% more energy than the same unit at 32 Kph.
Coupled with larger heavier tractors and trailers with larger loads and the need for large drum brakes to provide effective stopping power is clear.
Adequately sized drum brakes supplied on Stronga cargo trailers offer proven stopping power that work even in rugged agricultural field conditions while providing low service costs with readily available economically priced wearing part replacement. This benefits customers with lower cost of ownership and a safer tractor – trailer transport solution.

Brakes fitted to Stronga bulk agricultural trailers are sized for both performance and long service life leading to reduced brake wear on the trailer and the tractor.
High thrust bearings sit between the axle shaft and brake drum to absorb the large forces that occur under heavy braking while s-cam brake operators provide graduated braking in all conditions leading to reduced brake wear giving longer service intervals and lower operating costs.

Stronga look after the small details like double springs and larger diameter brake pipes on hydraulic brake systems to increase the speed that brakes come off after actuation, further reducing brake and tyre wear on the bulk trailer.

Together with our supply partners at WABCO Vehicle Control Systems Stronga fit hydraulic, air and dual braked systems to the BulkLoada range of agricultural bulk trailers to the customer’s requirements.
WABCO pioneered breakthrough electronic, mechanical and mechatronic technologies for braking, stability and automation systems supplied to the world's leading agricultural trailer manufacturers.
Load sensing comes as standard on Stronga air and dual braked trailers providing braking force graduated to the load in the cargo trailer.
Hydraulic load sensing is also available as an option.
Large air receivers provide ample air reserve while technically advanced options include Wabco Electronic braking systems see more information at www.wabco-auto.com
